Hello, my sisters in Christ! It’s Rodolphia, and I just have a quick update for you on what’s been going on in my spiritual life lately. I hope this post encourages you in your walk with our Lord Jesus Christ.
I’ve been distracted. I’ve been distracted to the point where my relationship with the Lord has been put on hold, just so I can meet the needs of my distractions. Yes. I know how evil and sinful that sounds, but it’s the truth. I’ve come to realize that in order to overcome it, I need to do three things.
1. Acknowledging My Distractions
This is the first step and personally, it was crazy hard. It was hard for me to acknowledge that my distractions were a problem. It was hard to acknowledge that spending hours watching movies or videos on youtube was a distraction. It was just too hard to acknowledge that even sleep was becoming a distraction. But why? I’ll tell you why. It’s because acknowledgment would confirm that there really is a problem. But acknowledgment must be done if I’m to overcome this struggle—and ladies it is a struggle. And if I’m being honest, this post is my way of acknowledging it.
If you’re a sister in Christ with this same problem you must first acknowledge your distractions.
2. Praying My Way Out
Before I can take this step, I first need to recognize that I can do absolutely nothing without my Lord. I know the grace and power of the Lord Jesus Christ. So, I will not continue in my foolishness by trying to get out of this sinful habit on my own. It’s not going to happen. I can have the strength of a thousand men and I would still not be able to do so. I will not attempt to fight distractions own my own strength, I will pray earnestly for the grace, mercy, and power of the Lord to defeat this.
Ladies, when praying your way out remember to be ceaseless in prayer. One prayer in the morning during your devotional will not do. Distraction is a battle between your carnal flesh and the devil. You must remain fervent and constant in your prayers.
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
John 15:5
3. Be Intentional
This is the simplest one, but it may prove to be hard in some aspects because it requires discipline. I need to take this day by day. I need to be intentional in my prayer time, bible reading time, and the times where I find myself unoccupied from lack of work. When that happens, I will fill my time of distraction with seeking the Lord. Instead of watching countless movies, I will read the word and study it. Instead of scrolling youtube videos, I will pray and worship. I will be intentional.
I write this post to myself and to others who are going through the repeated struggle of distraction. Please my sisters in the Lord, acknowledge the problem, pray your way out, and be intentional. Why? because distraction is a thief—a time waster and when it’s done, it always leaves you with shame and regret. Power up in prayer and flee all forms of distractions that are coming against you and what the Lord Jesus has for you!
